While visiting Laos this week, I ran across the Luang Prabang Book Boat program. Laos has a very low literacy rate among rural villages, and many schools have no library books or even textbooks. The Luang Prabang public library, along with Community Learning International, sponsors a book program. They encourage tourists who visit the city to purchase a book for the library’s book bag, and when they reach 100 books, they take the bag out to a village. Travelers can also donate clothes and toiletries, paper and pencils to help the village schoolchildren.
